DANNY FEDERICI TO TAKE LEAVE OF ABSENCE
Danny Federici, an original member of the E Street Band, is taking a leave of absence from the current Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tour to pursue treatment for melanoma. Charles Giordano, who played with Bruce as a member of the Sessions Band, will temporarily fill in for Danny until he is able to return. Federici has been playing keyboards with Springsteen since the late Sixties. Said Springsteen, "Danny is one of the pillars of our sound and has played beside me as a great friend for more than 40 years. We all eagerly await his healthy and speedy return."
I knew something was wrong with Danny... I could feel it. From the moment the first pictures of the band were released for MAGIC, he looked gaunt and frail (unlike his usual self). And as the reports of the tour kept coming in, you could see how Bruce kept giving Danny more room to shine... with heart warming solos on his keyboards, accordion and glockenspiel.
Everybody in the E Street Band is special... and Danny was second to none. During teh shout-outs, he was usually referred to as 'Hailing from Flemington, New Jersey - Brother Danny Federici!!' or 'Phantom Dan... Now you see him, Now you Don't!!'. Amazingly cool, even more rock-steady than Gary W. Tallent and filling in the rhythm with equally great timing as Professor Roy Bittan.
Danny readily admitted to being heart-broken and upset when asked about how he took the news of the break-up of the band after the Tunnel Of Love tour, ... he actually broke into tears when Bruce called him to break the news.
Brother Danny, I have spent years listening to your sweet music. I will pray for your speedy recovery.
The E Street Band in the late 70's: L to R - Mighty Max Weinberg, The Big Man - Clarence Clemons, The Boss, Professor Roy Bittan, Miami Steven Van Zandt, Garry W Tallent and Phantom Dan. Only Clarence, Bruce, Garry and Dan were around when the E Street Band was first formed.
