Live in Dublin: Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions Band

Live In Dublin is Bruce Springsteen at the top of his game. Accompanied by a group of inspired and often spiritually-possessed musicians, Bruce has come out with his best concert performance on DVD till date. To start off, this was filmed in HD. Enough said. The sound is fantastic too. I would have expected Sony BMG to come up with better packaging and booklet though.
The new deluxe version available in Asia includes the entire 23 song performance on both the DVD and 2 CDs (did it need 2 CDs?). The U.S release was done in 3 formats. Like most of Bruce’s concert albums, this too needs to be seen as much as heard. So the deluxe version is probably a great choice.

The setlist is well crafted – Folk classics he made popular to a new audience through his 2006 release ‘We Shall Overcome – The Seeger Sessions’ interspersed with drastically altered versions of his original Classics. The evolution of the hardest working man in rock is there for all to see. Versions of Springsteen classics like Atlantic City, Blinded By The Light, Open All Hours, Further On (Up On The Road), Highway Patrolman and Growin' Up sound like brand new songs. Also featured are traditional folk covers (open domain) like We Shall Overcome, When The Saints Go Marching In and This Little Light Of Mine.

Rock (blues), Folk, Bluegrass, New Orleans Jazz, Dixieland, Spiritual (Southern Gospel)… all rolled into one giant celebration.

The instruments… Banjos, trombones, trumpets, saxophone, piano, accordiaon, harmonica, tambourines, fiddles, steel guitars, acoustic guitar, drums… and add the crowd. The crowd was behaving like they were in a concert with Bruce and the E Street Band. Most importantly, I though Bruce was having the time of his life during this concert.

My highlights:
Opening Banjo on Jesse James.
Open All Night from Nebraska, drastically transformed into a roadhouse rock n roll exhibition. And the mid-section featuring the female vocalists (led by Ms.Patti Scalfia) doo-wopping four male vocalists.
Pay Me My Money Down – For crowd participation.
How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live – message to G.W Bush and his friends. A home-run every time it is performed.
When The Saints Go Marching In – Spiritual feelings aroused in someone as apathetic as I am.
Blinded By The Light – Mexicanzed version.
We Shall Overcome – By now, I couldn’t stop the tears!!

If you thought you’ve seen the best of Bruce – do yourself a favour and stop thinking. Grab a drink in one hand, your holy bible in the other – and lets get into some musical baptism!!
